Although Ullmark’s performance has been inconsistent this season, his absence creates a notable gap in the Senators’ lineup. With 14 wins in 28 games, a 2.95 goals-against average, and a .881 save percentage, Ullmark’s contributions will be sorely missed. Following a challenging game against the Toronto Maple Leafs where he allowed four goals on 14 shots, Ullmark’s teammates expressed their full support for him ahead of the upcoming match against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Merilainen, who has a 4-6 record and a .874 save percentage in nine starts this season, will now be tasked with shouldering the workload in Ullmark’s absence. He impressed last season when he filled in for Ullmark, recording a 7-2-1 record with three shutouts. With the Senators currently outside of a playoff position, they will rely on Merilainen to deliver his best performance.
Captain Brady Tkachuk praised Merilainen’s competitive spirit, highlighting his determination to win. Merilainen will start against Columbus, with Hunter Shepard called up from the AHL’s Belleville Senators to serve as backup.
Despite facing various injuries throughout the season, including Brady Tkachuk missing 20 games due to a thumb injury, the Senators have persevered. Alternate captain Thomas Chabot emphasized the team’s need to step up in Ullmark’s absence and continue winning games to support their teammate during this challenging time.
In positive news for the Senators, defenseman Tyler Kleven returns to the lineup after a three-game absence, and forward Shane Pinto, who missed 10 games, will be a game-time decision after participating in a full practice. Defenseman Nick Jensen will be a healthy scratch for the upcoming game.
