The Finnish team sought redemption after losing to the Americans in last year’s final in Ottawa.
Finnish captain Aron Kiviharju praised the U.S. team’s skill and coaching but expressed satisfaction in avenging last year’s defeat. In the upcoming semifinals, Finland will face Sweden, while Canada will take on the Czech Republic, following Sweden’s 6-3 win over Latvia, Canada’s dominant 7-1 victory against Slovakia, and the Czech Republic’s 6-2 triumph over Switzerland.
Michigan State’s Lee Ryker leveled the score for the United States with 1 minute and 33 seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Lee Tuuva and Joona Saarelainen scored quickly in the third period to give Finland a lead, with Tuuva contributing to both goals. Boston University’s Cole Hutson, returning from injury, made an impact for the U.S. team, scoring a goal and assisting on another.
Despite a strong effort, the United States suffered back-to-back defeats, including a 6-3 loss to Sweden, ending their impressive run. Coach Bob Motzko commended his team’s efforts but acknowledged Finland’s resilience in securing the win.
Elsewhere in the quarterfinals, Sweden defeated Latvia with Anton Frondell scoring twice, while the Czech Republic secured a 6-2 victory over Switzerland. In a relegation game, Germany triumphed over Denmark 8-4, securing their place in next year’s tournament while Denmark dropped to Division I-A.
