“Eerie Sea Spiders Unveiled in Salish Sea”

Date:

A peculiar ocean-dwelling creature, resembling a nightmarish monster with hairy legs and red eyes, is not a figment of imagination but a reality on Earth. Recently, researchers unveiled two previously unknown species of these eerie sea spiders in the Salish Sea region of southern British Columbia.

The study, led by Cormac Toller-Scott from the University of British Columbia as part of his zoology master’s program, shed light on these ancient marine arthropods. Sea spiders, distant relatives of land spiders, have remained in the ocean since their evolution, distinguishing them from their terrestrial counterparts.

During extensive dives between September 2023 and August 2024 at various locations in the Salish Sea and Vancouver Island, Toller-Scott and his team explored depths of up to 18 meters, uncovering a diverse array of marine life. By meticulously analyzing physical characteristics and genetic data of sea spiders, they identified two new species residing on hydroids, peculiar organisms anchored to the seabed.

The newfound species were named Callipallene pilosuspedes, inspired by the hairy feet of one spider, and Tanystylum kiixin, paying homage to a nearby Indigenous village. This discovery adds to the limited knowledge of sea spider diversity in the region, emphasizing the importance of taxonomic research in unraveling the mysteries of marine ecosystems.

Notably, a separate UBC research team, led by biologist Shana Goffredi, recently uncovered three sea spider species thriving near methane seeps and hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. These spiders exhibited a unique ability to cultivate bacteria that convert methane into essential nutrients, showcasing the interconnectedness of marine life forms.

Despite the significance of taxonomic studies in advancing scientific understanding, projects like Toller-Scott’s sea spider research often face funding challenges. Toller-Scott highlighted the vast unexplored biodiversity along the West Coast of Canada, underscoring the potential for further discoveries in one of the world’s most diverse coastal regions.
