Democratic members of the House oversight and government reform committee announced their intent to probe whether the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) suppressed information regarding an abuse allegation against President Donald Trump in the published Epstein files. The committee believes that the DOJ failed to disclose FBI materials related to a woman who accused Trump of assault in 2019.
Congressman Robert Garcia, the committee’s ranking member, confirmed that the DOJ may have unlawfully held back FBI interviews with the accuser. He emphasized the urgency of sharing these records with Congress and the public under the oversight committee’s subpoena and the Epstein Files Transparency Act.
Garcia stated that he personally examined unredacted evidence logs at the justice department as part of the Democrats’ ongoing investigation into the handling of the accusation against Trump. In response, the DOJ refuted any allegations of improper document withholding, asserting that all responsive documents have been provided unless falling under specific categories such as duplicates, privileged, or part of an ongoing federal investigation.
The controversy arose following an NPR investigation revealing that certain Epstein-related files, including FBI interviews and conversations with the woman who accused Trump of sexual abuse when she was a minor, were not publicly disclosed as required by law. The New York Times further reported that FBI memos summarizing interviews related to the woman’s claim were missing from the published materials, raising questions about the DOJ’s transparency.
The woman reportedly named Trump while alleging that he made advances towards her in 1983 when she was 13 years old, with Trump being in his late 30s at the time. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing regarding Epstein-related allegations. The DOJ removed numerous documents from the Epstein files to protect the identities of individuals mentioned in the records, including women accusing Epstein of sex trafficking and other crimes.
Despite not addressing the Epstein controversy during his recent state of the union address, President Trump faces continued scrutiny, with Democratic lawmakers vowing to pursue justice for the survivors involved. Congressman Garcia emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and pledged to hold accountable those involved in any potential cover-up.
