Leah Partridge, a dedicated ringette player for the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks, showcases exceptional speed and awareness on the ice as she skillfully maneuvers through the game, keeping track of the ring, her teammates, and the unfolding play despite her profound deafness since birth. A fourth-year psychology student and assistant team captain, Partridge’s passion for the sport was evident as she recently competed in the Canadian University Ringette Challenge Cup, a prestigious national tournament.
Despite facing challenges due to her limited hearing, even with the aid of delicate hearing devices that often malfunction during intense gameplay, Partridge has honed her playing style by relying on visual cues and effective communication with her teammates. This unique adaptation has not only enhanced her gameplay but also earned her respect and support from her fellow players.
Originally from Londesborough, Ont., Partridge’s journey into university-level ringette was inspired by her sister’s involvement in the sport at Brock University. Since joining the Golden Hawks, her hearing impairment has been managed seamlessly by the team, with simple yet effective strategies ensuring her full engagement in the game. Partridge’s positive attitude and resilience have not only propelled her to excel on the ice but have also made her a valued leader as an assistant team captain.
Looking ahead, Partridge envisions continuing her ringette career post-graduation, potentially exploring opportunities in leagues like the National Ringette League. Despite a recent loss in the Canadian University Ringette Challenge Cup, where the Golden Hawks vied for the bronze title, Partridge’s determination and unwavering spirit continue to inspire her team and fans alike.
