SiriusXM Comedy Channel Overhaul Sparks Industry Outcry

Date:

Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant decrease in her earnings, mirroring the struggles of numerous other comedians. The decision by SiriusXM to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which previously showcased over 800 comedians, has left many in the industry without a crucial source of income and exposure. This change saw the channel replaced with a new one owned by top comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

Miele, based in Los Angeles, highlighted the financial impact of this move, stating that SiriusXM was instrumental in helping her stay afloat during difficult times. The channel served as a lifeline for many comedians, enabling them to support themselves, especially in situations like caring for sick relatives or taking maternity leave.

Despite assurances from Maniscalco and SiriusXM that the revamped channel would cater to comedians at various career stages, industry watchdog Stand Up for Standup revealed a stark contrast. The previous Raw Comedy channel featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per play. In contrast, the new channel only showcased 275 comedians, with the top 50 artists, such as Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, receiving the majority of airtime.

Miele lamented the shift towards a concentration of wealth, where a select few wealthy comedians dominate the platform, leaving many struggling artists sidelined. The impact is not only financial but also affects the diversity and opportunities within the comedy industry.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared his experience of the income loss following the channel’s change, emphasizing the critical role SiriusXM royalties played in sustaining many comedians’ careers. He expressed concerns that the loss of this income stream could force some Canadian comedians to return home due to visa implications.

Calls from prominent comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf urge Maniscalco to support emerging comedians and ensure a platform for their growth. Maniscalco, in response to the backlash, clarified that he was not involved in the decision to end Raw Comedy and reduce the channel’s roster. SiriusXM attributed the change to the channel’s underperformance.

Looking ahead, there is a call for solidarity among comedians to address industry challenges and ensure fair treatment and pay. Despite the setbacks, there is hope for a united front to navigate the evolving landscape of comedy entertainment.
