“Canada Allocates $228.8M for Ontario Workers Hit by U.S. Tariffs”

Date:

The Canadian government has allocated $228.8 million for a three-year period to assist Ontario workers affected by U.S. tariffs in acquiring new skills and adapting to the challenges posed by the trade war. This initiative, known as the Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response, aims to provide support to workers and job seekers in the softwood lumber, steel, and automotive sectors, which continue to face significant tariffs from the United States. Additionally, workers in industries indirectly impacted by tariffs will also have access to the training and employment services offered under this program.

Approximately 27,000 workers in Ontario are expected to benefit from training and other assistance through this program, as estimated by the government. The announcement of this funding was made by Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu in collaboration with Ontario Jobs Minister David Piccini at Parliament Hill. Furthermore, Minister Hajdu unveiled an additional investment of $94.5 million over a span of five years to enhance data sharing related to job opportunities in key sectors.

This funding initiative aims to support Ontario workers in acquiring new skills amidst the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States, providing them with resources to navigate the challenges brought about by tariffs and disruptions in various industries.
