“Canadian Women’s Hockey Roster Takes Shape for Olympics”

Date:

Twenty-five athletes are set to participate in the upcoming Rivalry Series for the Canadian women’s hockey team, as Hockey Canada progresses in selecting the squad to vie for Olympic gold. The Rivalry Series, a pivotal test for players striving to secure a spot on the roster for the upcoming Olympics in Milan, Italy, is fast approaching with less than 100 days remaining.

This series serves as a rare opportunity for the team to explore different line combinations and enhance team chemistry, given the limited time of only four games before the Olympics kick off in February. The competition will kick off this Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by another match on Saturday in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Rivalry Series will culminate with two games scheduled in Edmonton on Dec. 10 and 13, with expectations of a revised roster for these final encounters. Tough decisions await Canadian head coach Troy Ryan and his team as they work towards finalizing the 23-player roster for the Olympics.

Canadian GM Gina Kingsbury emphasized the significance of these games, stating that they serve as a crucial yardstick in the team’s preparation for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games. The team has been focused on refining their on-ice identity and fine-tuning details believed to be pivotal for their success.

Traditionally, Olympic hopefuls would train together in a centralized location for several months, but Hockey Canada has adopted a new selection approach through the PWHL, where 30 potential Olympians have participated in training blocks across the country this fall.

The roster for the U.S. leg of the Rivalry Series comprises all three NCAA players aspiring to secure a spot on their first Olympic team: Chloe Primerano, Caitlin Kraemer, and Ève Gascon. The team will feature key veterans in the initial Rivalry Series games, including captain Marie-Philip Poulin and other experienced players.

In net, the absence of Canadian starter Ann-Renée Desbiens will provide an opportunity for Emerance Maschmeyer, Ève Gascon, and Kayle Osborne to showcase their skills for the backup positions. The final Olympic roster will consist of 23 players.

With limited games before the Olympics, the coaching staff is closely monitoring the formation of chemistry during training blocks. The PWHL training camps are set to commence soon, with both Canadian and U.S. national team players expected to join their respective teams.

The PWHL will play a crucial role in decision-making for the Canadian management group, with half of the regular season scheduled before the league halts for the Olympics in January. The league opener on Nov. 21 will feature exciting matchups, setting the stage for an intense and competitive season.
