Prime Minister Mark Carney is anticipated to hold discussions with King Charles during his upcoming visit to the United Kingdom next week. Carney is scheduled to land in London on Sunday following his trip to Norway to witness the NATO Cold Response maneuvers and take part in a summit involving Nordic nations.
The meeting between the prime minister and the King is planned for Monday, nearly a year after Charles traveled to Canada to present the throne speech at the commencement of the 45th Parliament. Carney mentioned in a briefing with journalists on Thursday that the King has a keen interest in developments in the Arctic region and the impacts of climate change on the northern territories.
Moreover, Carney highlighted that the King recently engaged in talks with Treaty 6 chiefs, indicating a wide array of topics for their upcoming discussions. During a face-to-face meeting with Indigenous leaders, King Charles reportedly expressed concern about the separatist movement in Alberta.
In addition to his meeting with the King, Carney is also scheduled to hold talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. A senior government official mentioned that the discussions will revolve around the situations in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Although his visit to London marks the final official stop on his itinerary, Carney will continue to stay in Europe for personal obligations. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that Carney will maintain close coordination with his team and officials on various critical matters during his time in Europe.
Carney clarified on Thursday that his time off does not amount to a full week and emphasized his commitment to remain visible and connected as needed. He praised the strength of his government’s cabinet and highlighted his approach of delegating authority to ministers as one of his leadership traits.
