Iran’s Leadership Grapples with Internal Rifts amid Rising External Threats

Date:

Iran’s leadership is facing internal rifts over a perceived existential threat of war, exposing tensions between hardline and pragmatic factions. President Masoud Pezeshkian sparked controversy by apologizing to neighboring countries affected by Iran’s actions and urging them not to align with U.S.-Israeli attacks. He clarified that Iran would refrain from striking nearby states unless attacks originated from their soil, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand for unconditional surrender as unrealistic.

Despite Pezeshkian’s efforts to ease tensions, his apology drew backlash from hardliners in the Revolutionary Guard and clerical elite, leading to a partial retraction. The judiciary chief, Ayatollah Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, accused some regional countries of aiding U.S. attacks on Iran, vowing continued retaliation.

Internal divisions within Iran’s ruling class, previously subdued under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have surfaced following his recent death. The ongoing U.S. and Israeli attacks have heightened pressure on Tehran, prompting calls for expedited selection of a new supreme leader to bolster national unity and counter external threats.

As Iran navigates these turbulent times, the power dynamics among its ruling elite are shifting, with hardliners asserting influence and disagreements becoming more pronounced. The future leadership succession, including potential candidates like Mojtaba, son of the late Khamenei, remains a focal point amid escalating tensions and power struggles within the Iranian regime.
