“Canada Invests $200M in Own Space Launch Pad”

Date:

The Canadian government is investing $200 million in a Canadian-owned space launch pad to facilitate satellite launches into orbit. The funding will cover a 10-year lease for the launch pad, a critical capability outlined in the federal government’s new defense industrial strategy.

Currently, Canada relies on the United States for launching its space projects. The new launch pad, expected to be operational by 2028, aims to enhance Canada’s sovereignty and security in space endeavors.

Defence Minister David McGuinty unveiled the project at a Canadian Space Agency lab in Ottawa, emphasizing the significance of satellites in various sectors of the Canadian economy. The goal is to reduce dependency on external parties for space launches.

Canada is also set to join the NATO Starlift initiative, allowing allies to send payloads into space promptly. Maritime Launch Services, based in Halifax, is developing Spaceport Nova Scotia near Canso, N.S., with the federal contract providing a significant boost to the company.

Stephen Matier, the CEO of Maritime Launch Services, highlighted the importance of having a sovereign launch capability for Canada, emphasizing the need to move away from relying solely on foreign launch providers like SpaceX.

The announcement aligns with the surging number of spacecraft being launched globally, with projections indicating a substantial increase in satellite launches in the coming years. Establishing sovereign launch capacity will enable Canada to prioritize its national interests without being subject to external timelines.

Sarah Gallagher, former adviser to the Canadian Space Agency, emphasized the strategic advantages of having a launch site in Nova Scotia, citing the region’s latitude for accessing different orbits, particularly beneficial for missions in the North.

This initiative forms part of the government’s strategy to bolster the domestic defense industry, with the 2025 budget allocating $183 million over three years for developing sovereign space launch capabilities.
