“Alberta’s ‘Forever Canadian’ Petition Garners 456,000+ Signatures”

Date:

A former deputy premier of Alberta has garnered overwhelming support for a petition aimed at solidifying the province’s commitment to remain part of Canada. Thomas Lukaszuk announced that the petition has amassed more than 456,000 signatures, surpassing the required 294,000 signatures needed to trigger a potential referendum.

During a news conference, Lukaszuk emphasized that the substantial number of signatures, representing 456,365 Albertans, clearly demonstrates a strong rejection of separatism. He urged Premier Danielle Smith and Alberta MLAs to address the issue and put an end to any discussions of Alberta’s independence.

The petition, known as “Forever Canadian,” was launched to counter separatist movements advocating for a referendum on Alberta’s sovereignty. Lukaszuk’s petition straightforwardly asks, “Do you agree that Alberta should remain within Canada?”

While the government has not confirmed plans for a referendum, a press secretary for Alberta’s justice minister mentioned that they are awaiting the verification process by Elections Alberta. The rival Alberta Prosperity Project has proposed a contrasting question, “Do you agree that the province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province of Canada?”

Lukaszuk expressed hope that Premier Smith would heed the overwhelming response to the petition and avoid a divisive referendum. He recounted the extensive efforts made by himself and other volunteers, traveling thousands of kilometers over three months to collect signatures, with many signatories sharing personal stories emphasizing their strong Canadian identity.

Elections Alberta has confirmed receipt of the signatures and will conduct verification within 60 days, with results expected by January 6. If successful, the petition will be submitted to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Lukaszuk highlighted the historic scale of the petition, noting that it presents a unique challenge to the elections commissioner.

As the process concludes, Lukaszuk looks forward to resuming his regular activities, expressing gratitude for the widespread support received throughout the petition campaign.
