Three-term city councilor Andrew Knack emerged victorious as the mayor-elect of Edmonton after his fellow frontrunner Tim Cartmell conceded the race and extended congratulations on Tuesday. Knack secured over 38% of the vote by 8:20 p.m., surpassing Cartmell’s nearly 30% with 91.5% of polls reporting. In his victory speech, Knack credited the success to the collective effort of all workers and volunteers who dedicated their time to the campaign.
Initially announcing he would not run in the next municipal election in September 2024, Knack later reversed his decision to offer an independent voice based on his 12-year track record of engaging with individuals from diverse political backgrounds. A total of 13 candidates vied for the mayoral position, including notable figures like pediatric surgeon Omar Mohammad and former councilors Michael Walters and Tony Caterina.
The municipal elections in Alberta witnessed the introduction of new political rules by the United Conservative Party government, permitting political parties and corporate and union donations. Knack highlighted the rejection of party politics in Edmonton and referenced the victory of Jeromy Farkas in Calgary, emphasizing the preference for independent candidates who listen to the concerns of all residents.
Cartmell, the only candidate running under the Better Edmonton political party banner, expressed pride in his team’s accomplishments despite the election outcome. The unofficial voter turnout stood at 30.27%, with 205,758 out of 679,830 eligible voters casting their ballots. Key election issues included housing, affordability, property taxes, and public safety.
Knack’s campaign promises focused on enhancing day shelters, increasing peace officer presence with social workers in the transit system, and advocating for budget restructuring without compromising essential services. With the swearing-in ceremony for Knack and the city council set for October 29, Edmontonians await the new leadership to address the city’s pressing challenges.
