“Canada Abandons Plan to Plant 2 Billion Trees by 2031”

Date:

The government’s plan to plant two billion trees by 2031 is being abandoned, as revealed in Tuesday’s budget, according to informed sources. Currently, existing contracts are in place to fulfill the planting of one billion trees, as confirmed by one source. This decision, reported first by the Globe and Mail, marks a shift from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s earlier commitment to a “climate competitiveness strategy,” while also discontinuing key climate policies established during Trudeau’s leadership, such as the consumer carbon tax and electric-vehicle sales mandate.

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau initially announced the tree-planting initiative during the 2019 election campaign, allocating $3.2 billion over a decade for the program. However, uncommitted funding will now be redirected elsewhere, according to sources. The government has encountered challenges in meeting its annual tree-planting targets, falling short by over 1.7 billion trees needed to reach the 2030-31 goal.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the upcoming budget would involve significant cuts and savings, along with tax structure modifications and substantial spending without detailed revenue sources. Carney has emphasized the need to reduce government spending, aiming to achieve a balanced budget for day-to-day expenses within three years. The expenditure review process is concentrating on refining program delivery, program adjustments, and operational modernization.

Despite the anticipated budget cuts, Carney anticipates a higher deficit compared to the previous fiscal update. He emphasized the challenges ahead, emphasizing the necessity of sacrifices and time for economic transformation. The budget will introduce tax structure changes to enhance competition and growth, including revisions to the tax credit enabling businesses to deduct capital expenses. Sources privy to this information have remained anonymous due to the confidential nature of the budget details.
