“Canadian Teen Victoria Mboko Named WTA Newcomer of the Year”

Canadian tennis sensation Victoria Mboko has been honored as the WTA’s newcomer of the year. The esteemed women’s tennis tour revealed its annual award winners on Monday. Hailing from Toronto, the 19-year-old Mboko significantly improved her ranking from beyond the top 300 to cracking the top 20 following an outstanding performance in 2025. The pinnacle of her remarkable season occurred in August when she clinched victory at the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Montreal. Notably, she triumphed over four Grand Slam singles champions, including the four-time major winner Naomi Osaka, in the final to secure her maiden tour title. Additionally, Mboko secured a WTA title in Hong Kong in November, triumphed in four consecutive ITF World Tennis Tour events early in the year, and made it to the third round at the French Open. Last week, she was recognized as one of the International Tennis Federation’s five promising talents and was recently invited by Prime Minister Mark Carney to his office on Parliament Hill for a special reception.
