Canada is broadening its Express Entry immigration program to attract various skilled workers deemed essential by the Liberal government for economic growth and national defense. The updated categories within Express Entry prioritize individuals such as researchers, senior managers, pilots, aircraft mechanics, inspectors, and skilled military recruits. Successful candidates invited to join the program gain expedited access to permanent residency.
Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab unveiled the expansion of the program at the Canadian Club of Toronto, emphasizing the importance of attracting and retaining skilled workers through Express Entry. The initiative aims to proactively recruit individuals needed by Canada, connect them with local employers, and emphasize the country’s appeal as a prime destination for career and life-building opportunities.
Under the revised program, researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience are being fast-tracked for permanent residency to foster innovation and economic development. Additionally, pilots, aircraft mechanics, and inspectors are being targeted to enhance supply chains and economic resilience. Skilled military recruits must have job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces to qualify for the Express Entry program, aligning with the government’s commitment to fortify national security and defense.
The new Express Entry category dedicated to skilled military members supports Prime Minister Mark Carney’s defense industrial strategy, announced recently. The inclusion of senior managers and researchers aims to attract global talents to Canada, enriching the country’s workforce and research capabilities.
Furthermore, the initiative to expedite permanent residency for 5,000 doctors, beyond current immigration levels, underscores the government’s efforts to attract international talent and restore public trust in the immigration system. These measures are part of the International Talent Attraction Strategy outlined in the budget to drive economic growth and maintain a balanced immigration system.
Diab highlighted the government’s commitment to managing population growth and ensuring community sustainability amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic. The goal is to reduce new permanent residents to less than one percent of the population and limit non-permanent residents, international students, and temporary foreign workers to below five percent by 2027.
In addition to the new immigration streams, existing pathways for qualified workers proficient in French and various professions, including healthcare practitioners and skilled tradespeople, are being preserved. Furthermore, workers in science, technology, engineering, and math fields remain eligible for Express Entry to support Canada’s innovation drive.
