“Cricket Canada Suspended from Safe Sport Program”

Date:

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport has placed Cricket Canada on suspension from the Canadian Safe Sport Program due to non-compliance with participant e-learning and consent requirements, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

Following the transfer of safe sport management responsibilities to the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport from the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner on April 1, the CCES has been tasked with overseeing and investigating complaints and reports of abuse and maltreatment in sport.

Since assuming this role, the CCES has been collaborating with Cricket Canada to implement the Canadian Safe Sport Program. This initiative involves participants completing a compulsory 40-minute e-learning module and consenting to a form to ensure understanding of their rights and obligations under the safe sport program.

In a statement, the CCES noted that the essential requirements have not been met, and both Cricket Canada and Sport Canada have been informed of the situation. Failure to fulfill these foundational requirements may impede the processing of safe sport reports involving individuals from these organizations, as these obligations are crucial for safeguarding all participants and reinforcing the sport community’s shared responsibility in upholding safe sport standards.

The CCES highlighted that cricket players no longer have access to CCES reporting mechanisms or protections and must turn to Cricket Canada for available options. Upon completion of the outstanding obligations, the CCES stated its intention to reinstate Cricket Canada in the Canadian Safe Sport Program, with the information being made public.

At the time of the report, Cricket Canada had not provided a response to an email request for comment.
