Rising tennis talent Gabriel Diallo leads the five-player lineup representing Canada in the upcoming Davis Cup qualifier against Brazil next month at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Diallo, hailing from Montreal and ranked 40th globally, will be accompanied by Liam Draxl from Newmarket, Ont., Alexis Galarneau from Laval, Que., Nicolas Arsenault from Richmond Hill, Ont., and Cleeve Harper from Calgary, as confirmed by Tennis Canada in a recent announcement.
Scheduled for February 6-7 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, the first-round match will see Diallo making his 10th consecutive appearance in the Davis Cup. Having achieved a top 100 ranking on the ATP Tour in 2024 and securing his maiden ATP Tour title at the Libema Open last year, Diallo is eager to excel in the upcoming tie.
The outcome of the fixture will determine which nation progresses to the second qualifying round in September. The seven victorious teams from the second round will join Italy, the host and defending champion, in the Davis Cup Final 8 in November. The Canada-Brazil tie, structured as a best-of-five format, will commence with two singles matches, followed by a doubles match and two more singles matches on the subsequent day.
Expressing optimism about the team’s prospects, Canadian captain Frank Dancevic stated, “We are very pleased to announce such a strong team for our upcoming Davis Cup tie in Vancouver. Last year, for the first time in a long time, we didn’t make it to the final stage of the competition, which has only motivated us even more to make it happen this year.”
Having clinched the Davis Cup title in 2022, the Canadian team earned their place in the first qualifying round by defeating Israel 4-0 in a World Group I tie in Halifax last September. Draxl currently holds the 132nd position in the latest singles rankings, while Galarneau and Arsenault are ranked at No. 213 and 501st, respectively. Harper boasts a doubles ranking of 94th.
