Greenland’s Anxiety: Impact of Trump’s Aggressive Tactics

Date:

Donald Trump’s aggressive behavior towards Greenland has paused for now, but the lasting impact of years of intimidation by the U.S. president has deeply affected the island.

Nivi Rosing, 22, the youngest member of Parliament for the self-governing Danish territory, expresses the constant anxiety she hears in people’s voices.

“People are very frightened. It’s dominating our daily lives,” she shared with CBC News during an interview in her parliamentary office in Nuuk, the capital.

Trump first mentioned the idea of acquiring Greenland in 2019, but his threats and pressure tactics have intensified in recent months.

Rosing finds little comfort in the fact that Trump has allowed NATO to play a significant role in Greenland’s military planning and established a working group with the Danish and Greenlandic governments to address U.S. concerns.

Due to Trump’s unpredictability, Rosing believes the potential outcomes are weighing heavily on the people of Greenland.

“Dog owners are vaccinating their dogs so they can leave the country if there’s any sign of an invasion,” Rosing mentioned.

The Prime Minister of the island, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stated during a special parliamentary session this week that Trump still desires control over Greenland and cautioned against complacency.

A remarkable political journey

For Rosing, being at the center of one of the most intense geopolitical standoffs in recent history is the latest development in her rapid political ascent that began a year ago in Canada.

In early 2025, Rosing was a post-secondary student in Ottawa, enrolled in the Inuit Studies program offered by Nunavut Sivuniksavut in partnership with Algonquin College.

Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS) provides Inuit-focused studies for up to 70 students annually, emphasizing history, culture, and human rights.
