“Jeromy Farkas Wins Calgary Mayoral Race After Recount”

Date:

A vote recount conducted by Elections Calgary has affirmed that Jeromy Farkas will become the next mayor of Calgary. Sonya Sharp, the second-place candidate, had requested the recount under the Local Authorities Election Act. The recount began on Monday morning and concluded with updated figures released by Elections Calgary on Tuesday, showing Farkas winning with 91,112 votes against Sharp’s 90,496, resulting in a 616-vote difference.

Prior to the recount, Farkas had initially secured 91,071 votes, while Sharp had 90,490 votes, indicating a gain for both candidates following the recount process. Sharp had cited the narrow margin of victory and the challenging circumstances faced by election workers, such as long lines, new procedures, and manual ballot counting lasting into the early hours of the morning, as reasons for her recount request.

All mayoral votes in Calgary were recounted as confirmed by the city. Following the completion of the recount, Farkas is scheduled to be inaugurated as Calgary’s new mayor on Wednesday at 6 p.m., alongside the newly elected council members. Farkas expressed gratitude towards his campaign team, Elections Calgary, and volunteer scrutineers for overseeing this vital aspect of the democratic process.

Farkas mentioned the recent efforts in forming a strong city council team to address the needs of Calgarians, acknowledging Sharp’s campaign with congratulatory remarks and expressing hope for continued public service commitment from her. CBC News has sought comments from Sharp regarding the outcome.
