Research conducted by York University PhD student Hadil Elsayed in southern Ontario revealed a significant decrease in the total mass of insects collected at protected sites since the 1990s. Similarly, a citizen-science project in the U.K. observed a sharp decline in flying insects by measuring insect splatter on license plates. Numerous studies worldwide have documented alarming insect population declines.
Elsayed meticulously trapped insects between 2021 and 2023 at Long Point National Wildlife Area and St. Williams Conservation Reserve, replicating a survey from the early 1990s. Her preliminary findings, yet to undergo peer review, indicate a nearly 50% reduction in the total trapped insect mass over the past three decades.
