Jeff Kent Voted into Baseball Hall of Fame

Date:

Former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Jeff Kent secured a spot in baseball’s Hall of Fame through the contemporary era committee’s election on Sunday. Meanwhile, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, both linked to steroids, were among the seven players who fell short once again. Kent’s induction was supported by 14 out of 16 ballots, exceeding the 75 percent threshold required.

Carlos Delgado received nine votes, with Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy each receiving six. Bonds, Clemens, Gary Sheffield, and Fernando Valenzuela fell short, garnering fewer than five votes. Kent is set to be enshrined at the Cooperstown hall in New York on July 26, alongside selections made by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, to be revealed on Jan. 20.

Throughout his 17-season career with various teams, including Toronto, the New York Mets, Cleveland, San Francisco, Houston, and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kent showcased his prowess as a five-time All-Star second baseman. His impressive stats include a .290 batting average, 377 home runs, and 1,518 RBIs. Notably, his 351 home runs as a second baseman stand as a record for the position.

Kent’s Hall of Fame journey saw a significant rise in support from 15.2 percent in 2014 to a peak of 46.5 percent in 2023. The Hall introduced new committee structures in 2022 to evaluate different eras, with separate ballots for players, managers, executives, and umpires, convening every three years.

Under revised rules by the Hall, candidates receiving fewer than five votes are ineligible for the committee’s ballot in the subsequent three-year cycle. Bonds and Clemens faced disappointment in their final BBWAA ballot appearances in 2022. Bonds, a seven-time NL MVP and 14-time All-Star outfielder, set records with 762 career home runs and 73 in a single season. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, boasted an impressive 354-184 record, a 3.12 ERA, and 4,672 strikeouts.

Looking ahead, the December 2027 ballot presents an opportunity for Pete Rose to be considered for Hall of Fame induction following a ruling by Commissioner Rob Manfred in May, lifting Rose’s permanent suspension posthumously in September 2024.
