Nick Kyrgios emerged victorious in the recent exhibition match dubbed the “Battle of the Sexes” in tennis, defeating Aryna Sabalenka, the top-ranked women’s player, with a score of 6-3, 6-3. The match, held at the 17,000-seat Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, was more of a lighthearted entertainment spectacle rather than a significant moment for gender equality.
During the match, both players engaged in light-hearted banter, showcased unconventional shots like under-arm serves, exaggerated grunting, and even entertained the audience with some dancing by Sabalenka during a timeout. The event drew a crowd with the most expensive tickets selling for nearly $800 US.
Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up, who has been limited by wrist and knee injuries, seemed to hold back at times. To level the playing field, Sabalenka played on a court segment almost 10% smaller than usual. Additionally, the players were restricted to one serve per point instead of the typical two.
After a spirited match, Kyrgios sealed the win on his third match point, both players sharing a friendly embrace at the net. Kyrgios admitted feeling nervous and described the match as a positive development for tennis.
Sabalenka viewed the match as valuable preparation for the upcoming Australian Open and expressed interest in facing Kyrgios again for a chance at “revenge.” She praised the event, highlighting her enjoyment and anticipation for a more competitive rematch with better insights into Kyrgios’ tactics and strengths.
The event’s title, “Battle of the Sexes,” paid homage to the 1973 match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, symbolizing King’s advocacy for equal pay and a female tour in tennis. However, in its recent iteration, the match lacked broader cultural significance. Instead, Sabalenka and Kyrgios, both represented by the Evolve agency that organized the exhibition, aimed to entertain a younger audience and generate revenue.
Kyrgios’ involvement in the match stirred controversy due to his past legal issues, including a guilty plea for an altercation with a former partner in 2021 and prior statements against equal pay in tennis.
