Mexican President Faces Backlash Over AI Image Scandal

Date:

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum accused Meta, the parent company of Instagram, of not adding an Artificial Intelligence label to a fabricated image of alleged drug lord Ryan Wedding that she presented during a recent press briefing.

Wedding is currently on trial in California after being taken into custody by the U.S. from Mexico. Sheinbaum is now facing mounting pressure to clarify the circumstances of Wedding’s arrest following contradictory accounts from Mexican authorities and the U.S.

At a press conference, President Sheinbaum showcased an image from an Instagram account of Wedding purportedly surrendering at the former U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. A recent analysis by CBC News revealed that the image was generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Instagram account in question, allegedly linked to Wedding, who was an Olympic snowboarder for Team Canada in 2002, had previously shared AI-generated photos of Wedding, as reported by CBC News.

Sheinbaum was questioned about the use of the manipulated image by a journalist citing the CBC News report in a routine media briefing on Tuesday.

Sheinbaum criticized Meta for not indicating that the image was artificially manipulated by AI.

She explained, “Every social network requires a label to acknowledge the use of artificial intelligence in any content. In this case, the image lacked any indication of AI manipulation.”

She noted the absence of a Meta label confirming the use of AI in the image, contrary to the social media policy that should be followed.
