“Michael Bradley Named Head Coach of New York Red Bulls”

Date:

Former Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley has taken on a new role as head coach of the New York Red Bulls. The 38-year-old Bradley replaces Sandro Schwarz, who was let go after two seasons with the team. New York Red Bulls missed the playoffs this season, ending a 15-year streak of postseason appearances by finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 12-15-7 record.

Bradley retired as a player in 2023 after a decade with Toronto FC. He quickly transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant coach at Norway’s Stabaek under his father Bob Bradley. Bradley’s coaching journey continued as he led the Red Bulls II team to the MLS Next Pro Cup title in November.

The New Jersey native, who earned 151 caps for the U.S. national team from 2006 to 2019, has a strong connection to the Red Bulls. The team initially drafted him in 2004 when it was known as the MetroStars and coached by his father. Bradley’s extensive playing career took him to various countries before landing at Toronto FC, where he achieved success by reaching multiple MLS Cup finals.

Julian de Guzman, the Red Bulls’ sporting director and a former teammate of Bradley, praised Bradley’s work ethic and winning mentality. Both Bradley and de Guzman have ambitions beyond just making the playoffs, aiming to build a team that plays attractive and dynamic football.

Bradley emphasized a new direction for the Red Bulls, focusing on youth, speed, athleticism, and dynamism. The club has begun to reshape its roster with several player changes. Despite his relatively short coaching experience, Bradley’s leadership qualities and tactical acumen from his playing days are expected to influence his coaching style positively.
