“NORAD Commander Warns of Rising Russian and Chinese Activity in Arctic”

Date:

There has been a noticeable shift in the activities observed by NORAD in the Arctic region, particularly involving Russian and Chinese elements, according to the top commander of NORAD, U.S. Gen. Gregory Guillot. Guillot highlighted an increase in coordinated air and sea incursions near North America, with multiple ships and air activities occurring simultaneously in various parts of the Arctic Ocean and the Bering area.

Defense analysts suggest that such activities are designed to test the responses of the U.S. and Canadian militaries. By the end of December 2025, NORAD had reported detecting and tracking Russian military aircraft near the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on at least eight occasions in that year. While there were no publicized sea incursions, it was revealed that the Canadian military monitored a Chinese research vessel in Arctic waters off Alaska.

Guillot expressed confidence in NORAD’s monitoring capabilities and its readiness to protect the Arctic region. He mentioned ongoing discussions with Canada regarding potential participation in the Golden Dome missile defense system proposed by the Trump administration. The two countries are considering options for integrating missile defense within NORAD or managing it through separate operational commands.

A recent study highlighted Russia and China’s advancement in Arctic drone capabilities, prompting increased collaboration between the U.S. Army and Canada in counter-drone technology testing. The U.S. military also plans to deploy a micro nuclear reactor in the Alaskan Arctic to power an air force base, aiming to enhance operational capabilities in extreme conditions.

Guillot emphasized the potential benefits of micro reactors for military operations in the Arctic, where adverse weather conditions pose significant challenges. The developments underscore the evolving security landscape in the region, with ongoing efforts to bolster defense mechanisms and enhance cooperation among North American allies.
