“Ontario Speed Cameras to Be Removed Despite Controversy”

Date:

In a move by Premier Doug Ford’s government, speed cameras in Ontario are set to be removed within the next two weeks. The legislation passed on Thursday bans the use of speed cameras, with the replacement measures proposed by the government still uncertain. Despite evidence suggesting the effectiveness of speed cameras in reducing speeds, Ford argues that alternatives such as speed bumps, roundabouts, and flashing signs are more impactful in calming traffic.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria mentioned the installation of temporary and larger signage in municipal speed camera-affected zones before the removal of speed cameras. The government plans to collaborate with municipalities in the coming weeks to implement additional traffic calming measures. Ford’s administration aims to encourage the use of speed bumps, raised crosswalks, and roundabouts, with a new fund expected to assist in covering associated costs.

Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward expressed concerns over the lack of clarity regarding the funding for alternative measures. She emphasized the importance of having replacement measures in place before removing speed cameras to avoid compromising road safety. Opposition leaders, including NDP Leader Marit Stiles and Liberal parliamentary leader John Fraser, criticized the decision to remove speed cameras, citing safety risks and contradicting evidence supporting their effectiveness.

The government’s decision to eliminate speed cameras follows incidents of vandalism where 17 automated speed cameras were dismantled in Toronto over a two-day period. The legislation to ban speed cameras was part of a red tape reduction bill that underwent accelerated processing, limiting public debate and skipping hearings.
