“Pakistan and Afghanistan on Brink of War Over Taliban Tensions”

Date:

Pakistan’s defense minister’s announcement of “open war” between Pakistan and Afghanistan came as a surprise despite historical ties between Pakistan and the Taliban. Pakistan, one of the three nations recognizing the first Taliban government in 1996, welcomed its return in 2021. However, escalating tensions over the past five years led to military clashes in early October last year and a now-collapsed ceasefire.

The recent conflict saw Pakistan conducting airstrikes on Taliban forces in major Afghan cities like Kabul and Kandahar, marking a significant shift from targeting militants with alleged ties to the group. Subsequently, Afghanistan retaliated, launching attacks in six provinces.

The root of the conflict lies in mutual accusations of increased terrorist activities since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan. Pakistan blames the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) for attacks, claiming the group finds refuge in Afghanistan. In return, the Afghan Taliban alleges Pakistan shelters ISIS members who continue to launch attacks despite the Taliban’s promises of enhanced security.

The ongoing discord is further exacerbated by a disputed border, a refugee crisis, and India’s involvement. The Durand Line border remains a point of contention, with Afghanistan never recognizing it. Additionally, millions of Afghan refugees in Pakistan face expulsion, including vulnerable groups. Pakistan’s historical ties with the Taliban, initially aimed at countering India, have strained as Afghanistan builds relations with New Delhi.

As the conflict unfolds, international mediation efforts by countries like Russia, China, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia aim to prevent further escalation. However, the risk of increased instability and global terrorism looms if the conflict persists. The potential for a large-scale conflict raises concerns among the populations of both Pakistan and Afghanistan, with memories of past conflicts adding to the fear of renewed misery.

The situation remains tense as the neighboring nations navigate a fragile peace amid escalating hostilities.
