Prince Harry, Celebrities Lose Privacy Lawsuits

Date:

Prince Harry and several notable British personalities faced a legal setback on Tuesday as they lost privacy lawsuits against the publisher of the Daily Mail. The lawsuit alleged that Associated Newspapers had unlawfully obtained information leading to numerous stories published between the 1990s and 2011. Among the individuals involved were singer Elton John, his spouse David Furnish, and actors Sadie Frost and Elizabeth Hurley. However, Judge Matthew Nicklin emphasized that the claimants had to prove the information was obtained unlawfully, stating that mere suspicion was insufficient.

In response to the ruling, Harry expressed disappointment, calling it a “whitewash” but not entirely surprising. Associated Newspapers hailed the decision as a victory, dismissing the claims as baseless smears. This lawsuit marked the final legal battle in a series of cases where Harry accused tabloids of using illicit methods. Notably, Harry had previously received compensation after winning a case against Mirror Group Newspapers for phone-hacking and unlawful information gathering.

In a separate lawsuit, Rupert Murdoch’s News Group in the U.K. issued an apology to Harry for phone hacking and privacy breaches. The court also dismissed claims of a secret deal between Murdoch’s group and Buckingham Palace to prevent royal lawsuits. Harry, who has been vocal about press intrusion, attributed his legal battles to a rift within the Royal family. The lawsuit also involved Elton John and David Furnish, who testified about articles that they claimed were homophobic towards them.

Former Liberal Democratic MP Simon Hughes and anti-racism activist Doreen Lawrence were among the other claimants in the case. Paul Dacre, the former editor-in-chief of Associated Newspapers, criticized Harry for his actions, citing his memoir’s revelations. Despite the legal challenges, Harry is currently in the U.K. for charitable engagements, including promoting the Invictus Games. His visit has sparked speculation about potential family meetings, as his immediate family remains in California.

Throughout his battles with the media, Harry has also faced scrutiny over his security arrangements in the U.K. Authorities have stated that Harry, no longer a senior royal, does not automatically qualify for full protection and that security assessments are conducted on a case-by-case basis.
