Roger Federer to be Inducted into Tennis Hall of Fame

Date:

Roger Federer has been selected for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his inaugural year of eligibility, as announced by the Rhode Island-based Hall on Wednesday. Federer, renowned for being the first man to secure 20 Grand Slam singles titles, was the sole player to garner adequate support in the player category for the Hall’s 2026 class.

Candidates are eligible for consideration after a five-year hiatus from the tour and must receive a minimum of 75 percent approval from the voting body, which includes tennis media, historians, industry figures, Hall members, and fans. The voting results are not disclosed by the Hall.

Mary Carillo, a television announcer, journalist, and former player, was elected in the contributor category. The induction ceremony is scheduled for August. Reflecting on his achievement, Federer expressed humility, stating, “I’ve always valued the history of tennis and the example set by those who came before me.”

Federer, one of eight men to achieve a career Grand Slam, claimed eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Open titles, five U.S. Open titles, and one French Open title. Initially modest about his success, Federer admitted, “I didn’t predict I was going to have this many majors.”

His illustrious career saw Federer surpassing Pete Sampras’ record by securing his 15th major title at Wimbledon in 2009. Federer’s retirement marked the end of an era, with his Grand Slam count being surpassed by Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who have 22 and 24 titles, respectively.

Known for his exceptional forehand, serve, and elegant on-court presence, Federer won 103 tournaments and 1,251 singles matches, second only to Jimmy Connors in the Open era. Federer’s achievements include five years as the ATP World No. 1, 237 consecutive weeks at the top ranking, and 310 total weeks.

Federer’s retirement in 2021 was followed by a farewell appearance at the Laver Cup alongside Rafael Nadal. His legacy extends to inspiring younger players like Carlos Alcaraz, who admires Federer’s grace on and off the court. Federer’s influence has been profound, setting new standards for sportsmanship and excellence in tennis.

The upcoming Hall of Fame ballot will feature Juan Martin del Potro and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the player category, with Serena Williams and Ash Barty eligible for induction for the first time after concluding their careers in 2022.
