Sandy Brondello is poised to make history as the inaugural head coach for the Toronto Tempo basketball team. Following the conclusion of her contract with the New York Liberty, where she guided the team to their first WNBA title in 2024, Brondello was not retained due to a season plagued by injuries resulting in an early playoff exit.
Brondello, who garnered considerable success with the Liberty, boasting a record of 107-53 over four seasons, has now accepted the challenge of leading the newly established Tempo, slated to debut in the upcoming season. While she was also a contender for the head coach position with the Dallas Wings, another opportunity arose with the Seattle Storm seeking a new leader.
The announcement of Brondello’s appointment was initially disclosed by The Next publication. Notably, her coaching prowess was evident during her tenure with the Phoenix Mercury, where she secured a championship in eight seasons. Following her successful stint with the Mercury, Brondello joined the Liberty in 2022, following her pivotal role in guiding the Mercury to the WNBA Finals in 2021.
Despite facing setbacks, including a loss in the 2023 finals, Brondello steered the Liberty to a triumphant WNBA championship in 2024, clinching the title in a thrilling Game 5 overtime victory against Minnesota.
