The UN Security Council has convened an urgent session to address the violent demonstrations in Iran at the behest of the United States. The situation remains uncertain as U.S. President Donald Trump has not specified potential actions against Iran, which has vowed retaliation to any perceived aggression. Trump mentioned that reports of fatalities in Iran’s protest crackdown were decreasing and indicated no immediate plans for mass executions, despite prior hints of intervention.
Both Iran and its Western adversaries have characterized the protests as the most severe since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iranian authorities allege that what began as legitimate economic grievances transformed into orchestrated unrest instigated by foreign antagonists, labeling the perpetrators as terrorists targeting security forces and public assets.
Trump has consistently voiced support for Iranian protesters but has been cautious about the extent of involvement. Iranian officials have warned of targeting U.S. interests in response to any interference. At the UN Security Council meeting, U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz affirmed American solidarity with the Iranian people and emphasized that all options are being considered to halt the violence.
Iran’s Deputy UN Ambassador dismissed accusations of foreign interference and affirmed Iran’s commitment to de-escalation. The official accused Waltz of spreading misinformation to conceal the U.S.’s purported role in inciting unrest. Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that a protester in Karaj would not face a death sentence, contradicting prior reports of impending execution.
Amid an internet blackout hindering communication, President Masoud Pezeshkian stated the government’s efforts to address economic grievances and corruption to enhance the purchasing power of marginalized populations. In response to the crackdown, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Iranian officials and institutions allegedly involved in the suppression of protests. The Group of Seven nations expressed readiness to implement additional sanctions if the situation escalates.
Trump indicated that sources suggested a reduction in fatalities from the crackdown. While not ruling out military action, he acknowledged a positive statement from Iran. The security alert level at the U.S. Al Udeid airbase in Qatar was lowered following tensions in the region. Amidst scattered opposition voices, exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi emerged as a prominent figure during the unrest.
Reports from a human rights group confirmed the deaths of numerous protesters and government affiliates since the protests began. Late disclosures included the death of a Canadian citizen among the casualties. Canada condemned Iran’s crackdown on demonstrators and supported the human rights of Iranian protesters, both independently and as part of the G7 coalition.
