The attempt by the NDP opposition to establish an independent public inquiry into the government’s response to a wildfire that devastated a northern Saskatchewan village in the summer has been unsuccessful. Saskatchewan NDP MLA Jordan McPhail’s proposal was rejected by the provincial government during its presentation on Tuesday. McPhail has spearheaded the NDP’s quest for information regarding the wildfire that swept through Denare Beach, Sask., causing the destruction of over 200 residences.
Instead of the public inquiry sought by the NDP, the provincial government has emphasized the independent review announced earlier this week concerning the 2025 wildfire season. MNP has been tasked with conducting this review, which will offer affected individuals the opportunity to share their experiences and perspectives. The outcomes of the review will be publicly disclosed.
McPhail expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s decision, stating that selecting who can speak in a review speaks for itself. The government’s choice has not been well-received by Denare Beach residents, some of whom were present at the legislature on Tuesday. Tasha Young, who lost both her home and business in the fire, initially had faith in the government after Premier Scott Moe apologized for the delayed visit to Denare Beach. However, she now views the government’s refusal to conduct a public inquiry as “illogical” and questions why the government is withholding answers that the community is seeking.
Dustin Trumbley, another Denare Beach resident, renewed his call for the resignation of Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod, claiming that McLeod is unfit for his position. Trumbley urged Moe to act responsibly and request McLeod’s resignation, citing doubts about McLeod’s ability to perform his duties effectively.
Rhonda Werbicki, another Denare Beach resident who lost her home in the wildfire, expressed confusion over the government’s reluctance to heed calls for an inquiry. She questioned why the government would not welcome a public inquiry if they had genuinely provided all possible assistance to the northern communities. Werbicki emphasized the importance of validating the government’s actions through a public inquiry.
