“Solo Sandhill Crane Sighting in Regina’s Wascana Park Sparks Concern”

Date:

Regina’s Wascana Park, typically known for its abundance of geese, has recently become a hotspot due to the sighting of a solitary sandhill crane, attracting the attention of bird enthusiasts like Dacie Matchett-Orb and her 11-year-old son Chevy. The duo ventured to the park in search of the rare crane after reports of its presence near the Saskatchewan Science Centre. Despite initial disappointment, they later spotted the distinctive red-crowned bird near the Conexus Arts Centre, prompting excitement, especially for young Chevy, who has a passion for bird photography shared with his grandmother.

Concerns have been raised by Bonnie Dell, the executive director of the Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan, who suspects the crane may be injured, given its unusual presence in an urban environment and limited flight abilities. Dell emphasized the importance of leaving the bird undisturbed to avoid added stress, particularly as it needs to conserve energy for survival during the cold weather.

In response to public interest and potential risks, the Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan, in collaboration with Salt Haven, is actively monitoring the sandhill crane with plans to capture and provide necessary care. Dell highlighted the possibility of humane actions, such as euthanasia, if the bird’s injuries are severe or irreparable, in compliance with provincial wildlife regulations prohibiting the retention of non-releasable wildlife. The focus remains on ensuring the well-being and best outcome for the sandhill crane under their care.
