Stellantis to Invest $13B in U.S. Manufacturing

Date:

Stellantis has revealed plans to inject $13 billion into expanding its manufacturing capacity in the United States over the next four years, a decision that involves relocating production of a specific model from Ontario and stirs worries about Canadian employment prospects.

Formerly known as Chrysler, the company has announced that the Jeep Compass, originally set to be manufactured at the Brampton Assembly Plant, will now be produced at the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois.

This investment move by Stellantis is expected to boost its vehicle production in the U.S. by 50% and create over 5,000 new jobs. However, in Canada, concerns have been raised about the impact on jobs, with Unifor national president Lana Payne stating that Canadian auto jobs are being jeopardized due to this decision.

The Brampton plant, which has been closed for retooling since early 2024 to prepare for the next generation model of the vehicle, had its work suspended in February amid tariff uncertainties.

Calling for government intervention to safeguard jobs, Payne emphasized the importance of holding Stellantis accountable for its commitments to Canadian workers. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed disappointment over the decision, highlighting its implications on the workforce and their families.

This significant investment in the U.S. by Stellantis coincides with challenges faced by the Canadian auto industry, including uncertainties and financial strains resulting from tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump in a bid to boost domestic vehicle production.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attributed the decision to the current U.S. tariffs and potential future trade actions, emphasizing the government’s efforts to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to protect Brampton employees and create alternative opportunities for them.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford voiced his discontent with Stellantis, vowing to advocate for the province’s autoworkers. He emphasized the need for clear assurances from Stellantis before any provincial funding for the Brampton project is considered.

Addressing concerns about the Brampton plant’s future, a Stellantis spokesperson underscored the company’s commitment to Canada, mentioning forthcoming discussions with the Canadian government to unveil plans for Brampton. Stellantis’s communication head, LouAnn Gosselin, reiterated the company’s longstanding presence in Canada and ongoing investments in the country.

Amidst speculations about Stellantis’s investment strategies, industry analyst Tom Venetis noted that the evolving tariff landscape is prompting the company to reassess its investment and manufacturing approaches.
