Summer McIntosh has once again made waves in the swimming world in 2025. The 19-year-old athlete from Toronto was honored as The Canadian Press female athlete of the year for the third consecutive year. McIntosh’s remarkable achievements included clinching four gold medals at the world championship in Singapore and breaking three world records at the national trials.
She joined an elite group of athletes by becoming only the second woman to secure gold in four individual events at a single world championship, a feat previously achieved by American star Katie Ledecky in 2015. McIntosh set herself up for success in Singapore by shattering world records in the 400-metre freestyle and individual medley, as well as the 200-metre individual medley during the trials in Victoria earlier in the year.
Expressing her confidence, McIntosh openly shared her goal of winning five gold medals in five races at the world championship. Despite just falling short of her ambitious target, she claimed victories in the 400 and 200 individual medleys, 400 freestyle, and 200 butterfly events. Additionally, she secured a bronze medal in the 800 freestyle, finishing behind the formidable Ledecky.
McIntosh highlighted the support and motivation she received from the Swimming Canada community during her time in Singapore. The prestigious Canadian Press female athlete award, voted on by editors, writers, and broadcasters from CP client news organizations nationwide, recognized McIntosh’s exceptional accomplishments in 2025. She garnered 34 of 53 votes, surpassing other notable athletes like rugby player Sophie de Goede and tennis player Victoria Mboko.
Training with renowned coaches and top-tier athletes, McIntosh continued to push her limits and refine her skills. After relocating her training base from Florida to France and subsequently to Austin, Texas, she experienced a transformative year filled with challenges and growth. Despite facing setbacks, including a health issue that briefly sidelined her, McIntosh bounced back and triumphed at the U.S. Open in December.
Looking ahead, McIntosh remains focused on surpassing her own world records and setting new milestones in the sport. With no major international competitions on the horizon for 2026, she is determined to continue her pursuit of excellence in the pool.
