“Trump Administration Unveils New U.S. Dietary Guidelines”

Date:

Americans are encouraged to prioritize whole foods and protein, reduce consumption of highly processed foods, and limit added sugar, as per the latest federal nutrition advice unveiled by the Trump administration. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins introduced the 2025-2030 U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, outlining updated dietary recommendations aimed at promoting a healthy diet and guiding federal nutrition programs and policies. Kennedy emphasized the importance of consuming real food during a White House briefing.

The guidelines stress the importance of incorporating fresh vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products into a balanced diet. They also caution against the intake of “highly processed” foods and refined carbohydrates, advising individuals to steer clear of salty or sweet packaged snacks like chips, cookies, and candy. These recommendations target ultra-processed foods, which account for a significant portion of the U.S. diet and have been linked to chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity.

Contrary to speculation, the new guidance does not revoke longstanding advice on limiting saturated fats. Instead, it suggests opting for whole-food sources of saturated fat, such as meat, full-fat dairy, or avocados, while maintaining saturated fat intake at no more than 10% of daily calories. The document also mentions butter or beef tallow as alternative options, deviating from past recommendations to avoid these fats.

Mandatory updates to the dietary guidelines, required every five years, aim to provide a blueprint for healthy eating. Despite existing guidelines, research indicates that a significant portion of the population fails to adhere to these recommendations, with over half of adults in the U.S. suffering from diet-related chronic ailments. Experts in the field of nutrition have lauded the new recommendations, emphasizing the importance of consuming whole foods and reducing highly processed carbohydrates for overall health.

The concise 10-page guideline document aligns with Kennedy’s commitment to creating clear and accessible dietary recommendations. It contrasts with previous versions, which have expanded over the years, culminating in a 164-page document released in 2020, accompanied by a four-page summary. The guidelines are expected to have a substantial impact on programs like the National School Lunch Program, which serves nearly 30 million American children on a typical school day.
