There is growing concern among political analysts and opponents of U.S. President Donald Trump that his administration is setting the stage to interfere in critical midterm elections that will decide the party in control of Congress.
This week, apprehensions peaked after Trump suggested in an interview that Republicans in Washington should have control over elections in at least 15 states, despite the U.S. Constitution granting states the primary authority in conducting elections.
Despite attempts by his press secretary to downplay these remarks, Trump escalated further by alleging on Tuesday that there were “rigged, crooked elections” in key swing-state cities like Detroit, Philadelphia, and Atlanta, advocating for a federal government intervention in vote counting.
“When you witness how poorly some states manage their elections, it is a disgrace,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office. “The federal government should not tolerate that. If they cannot conduct votes legally and fairly, someone else should take charge.”

- Trump instructing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to be present last week during FBI agents’ seizure of ballots from the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia, a state where Trump alleged election fraud.
- Attorney General Pam Bondi demanding states to provide their voter registration lists, including social security information, to the Department of Justice.
- Trump’s plans for an executive order to ban mail-in voting and electronic voting machines.
David Laufman, a former senior official at the U.S. Department of Justice specializing in national security, described Gabbard’s involvement in the ballot seizure as “astonishing and deeply troubling.”
These events collectively raise concerns about the administration’s motives for politicizing the upcoming elections in November.
‘Authoritarianism, voiced openly’
Former House Republican Adam Kinzinger, now a vocal critic of the president, labeled Trump’s calls for federal election control as “authoritarianism, voiced openly.”
“If Trump convinces his supporters that elections are inherently fraudulent unless he wins, any actions he takes to ‘rectify’ this alleged fraud can be portrayed as justified,” Kinzinger wrote in a Substack post.
He cautioned that such actions could include pressuring election officials, intimidating voters, purging voter rolls, and refusing to certify results.
