Trump Warns of 100% Tariff on Canadian Imports

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning, threatening to impose a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian imports if Canada engages in trade agreements with China. This statement follows Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which was seen as a response to U.S. actions.

In a social media post, Trump did not clarify the specifics of what constitutes a “deal.” Last week, Canada and China reached an agreement allowing 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into the Canadian market at a reduced tariff rate of 6.1 percent in exchange for China lowering tariffs on Canadian canola.

Trump criticized Carney, stating that if Canada becomes a conduit for Chinese goods into the U.S., it would be detrimental to Canada’s economy and way of life. The president emphasized that China’s influence over Canada is unacceptable.

Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc clarified that there is no pursuit of a free trade deal with China, but rather a resolution on important tariff issues. He reiterated the strong partnership between Canada and the U.S., emphasizing the mutual benefits for both countries’ workers and businesses.

Trump’s recent social media posts deviate from his initial reaction to Canada’s agreement with China, where he initially expressed positivity towards the deal. However, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick criticized Canada for complaining about its treatment by the U.S. government, citing the favorable trade deal between the two countries.

In response to Trump’s threats, Canadian officials and provincial leaders have pushed back, asserting that Canada will not be controlled by outside influences. Justice Minister Sean Fraser commended Carney’s actions and message, emphasizing the importance of Canada’s sovereignty.

Amid escalating tensions, Minister Marc Miller and Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the need for Canada to maintain its independence and sovereignty. Premier David Eby expressed his support for Carney’s stance, highlighting the importance of Canada standing firm on its own terms.
