Three individuals remained unaccounted for as uncontrollable wildfires swept through Victoria, Australia, causing destruction to properties and consuming extensive areas of bushland, authorities revealed on Friday. Anticipated damaging winds and temperatures reaching up to 46 degrees Celsius were forecasted for the northern region of Victoria.
Victoria’s Premier, Jacinda Allen, expressed concern, stating that the state was facing one of its most perilous fire days in recent memory. A fire near Longwood has ravaged over 35,000 hectares of bushland, while another blaze near Walwa has expanded to approximately 20,000 hectares since igniting on Wednesday amidst a severe summer heatwave in southern Australia.
Meteorologists have drawn comparisons to the conditions observed in 2019 when devastating bushfires swept through southeastern Australia, claiming 33 lives in what became known as the Black Summer.
An analysis by Climate Central released on Tuesday indicated that human-induced climate change has amplified the likelihood of extreme heat events by two to five times in various Australian regions.
With the fire danger rating set at “catastrophic” on Friday, authorities cautioned that both the Longwood and Walwa fires posed imminent threats to life and property. The Walwa fire has generated its own weather system, producing a pyrocumulonimbus cloud that triggered lightning and thunder.
Residents in numerous nearby towns were instructed to evacuate, while approximately 450 schools in Victoria shut down for the day, along with the cancellation of several regional train services. A statewide total fire ban was enforced on Friday.
Meanwhile, in New Zealand, MetService, the national weather provider, issued warnings of exceptionally high temperatures expected over the weekend as the heatwave crosses the Tasman Sea. Heat alerts were issued for specific areas along the eastern coast of New Zealand and the northern region of the South Island.
