Zohran Mamdani officially assumed the role of Mayor of New York City on Thursday, stepping into one of the most demanding positions in American politics. He pledged to overhaul the government to better serve the city’s hardworking and struggling working-class residents. Mamdani, a Democrat, took his oath in a decommissioned subway station beneath city hall, placing his hand on a Quran. Later in the day, he participated in a public inauguration where U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, a political figure he admires, administered the oath a second time.
Addressing a supportive crowd, Mamdani vowed to govern boldly and expansively, emphasizing his commitment to using city hall’s authority to enhance the lives of New Yorkers. He wasted no time after the event, revoking several executive orders issued by the previous administration following the indictment of former Mayor Eric Adams on corruption charges. Mamdani also announced plans to revitalize a city office focused on tenant protection and establish two task forces dedicated to housing construction.
During the inauguration, Mamdani reiterated his democratic socialist principles and emphasized his dedication to uplifting working-class individuals struggling with the city’s high living costs. He highlighted the importance of implementing policies like free child care, rent freezes, and city-managed grocery stores. Mamdani acknowledged the challenges ahead, including managing essential city services such as waste disposal, snow removal, and public transportation, while also being held accountable for any shortcomings.
Born in Uganda and raised in New York City, Mamdani has a background in political campaign work and previously served as a state Assembly member. At 34, he is the city’s youngest mayor and its first Muslim and South Asian descent leader. Despite the optimism surrounding his leadership, Mamdani faces opposition and skepticism, particularly regarding his criticisms of Israel’s government and clashes with some members of the Jewish community. However, supporters remain hopeful that he will bring unity and positive change to the city.
