A 12-year-old boy, identified as L.L., was discovered severely malnourished and underweight during a routine checkup by his family physician just eight days before his tragic death in the custody of two women in Burlington, Ontario. Dr. Graeme (Stephen) Duncan testified in court regarding the case of Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney, who are facing charges of first-degree murder in connection with the boy they were attempting to adopt.
During the examination on December 13, 2022, L.L. had exhibited a significant weight loss of around 10 pounds within a year, weighing less than he did at six years old and showing a halt in growth. Although L.L. seemed verbally responsive and behaved normally, his physical condition was concerning due to the drastic weight loss.
The doctor highlighted that Hamber and Cooney claimed L.L. suffered from an eating disorder and chronic vomiting. Despite Duncan’s prior referral to an eating disorder clinic, further action was pending. Test results indicated that L.L. was at high risk for a cardiac event leading to fatality, a fact that was emphasized during cross-examination by Monte McGregor, Hamber’s lawyer.
Duncan acknowledged that he did not fully adhere to recommended pediatric assessment guidelines during the checkup, which included detailed questions about eating habits, a thorough physical examination, and blood pressure measurements in different positions. Additionally, he did not advise immediate medical intervention despite L.L.’s critical condition, a decision he confirmed during his testimony.
Tragically, on December 21, 2022, L.L. was discovered in a severely emaciated and unresponsive state in the women’s basement, prompting his immediate hospitalization and subsequent death. The cause of death was inconclusive, but potential factors such as hypothermia or cardiac arrest related to severe malnutrition were not ruled out by the pathologist.
The trial has shed light on the concerning circumstances surrounding the adoption process of L.L. and his younger brother, J.L., who were under the care of Hamber and Cooney. Previous reports and testimonies have raised alarms about the women’s parenting methods, indicating a pattern of abusive behavior towards the children.
