Defence Minister David McGuinty is set to unveil a $3.7 billion initiative today aimed at constructing additional housing for the Canadian military. The government’s proposal involves the development of 6,000 new units across 25 communities where the Canadian Armed Forces are stationed, complementing the 800 units already in progress.
A recent report by Canada’s auditor general highlighted the aging and substandard condition of existing military housing units, exposing a shortage of housing facilities across various bases. To address this issue, CFB Gagetown in New Brunswick is scheduled to receive 500 new units, Kingston, Ont., will see 900 units, and Valcartier, Que., Petawawa, Ont., and Edmonton are each slated for over 1,000 new units.
Minister McGuinty emphasized that this initiative aims to support Armed Forces recruitment efforts, noting a 13% increase in recruitment over the past eight months.
