After exchanging letters for 43 years, two pen pals, one from Newfoundland and the other from Singapore, finally met face-to-face this week. Sonya Clarke Casey expressed how they had been sharing their life experiences through letters, always ending with the hope of meeting one day, though it seemed like a distant dream.
Their pen pal friendship began in 1983 when they were both in Grade 5, participating in a school program. The two women, Clarke Casey and Michelle Anne Ng, continued writing to each other consistently over the years. They recently sat together in St. John’s, reminiscing over the stacks of letters they had preserved for decades, filled with personal stories, drawings, and updates about their lives.
Their correspondence covered various topics, from local news and teen fashion to personal milestones like pregnancies. As the years passed, they incorporated email and Facetime into their communication but still cherished the tradition of handwritten letters.
The long-awaited meeting brought tears of joy as they embraced each other, amazed that after all these years, they were finally meeting in person. Despite the face-to-face connection, they both emphasized that their friendship would continue through letters, envisioning a lifelong bond.
