“Canadian PM Carney Asserts Independence from U.S.”

Date:

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded directly to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks suggesting that “Canada lives because of the United States.” Carney emphasized that Canada thrives not because of its neighbor but because of its own identity as a nation during a speech at the Liberal cabinet meeting in Quebec City.

Carney highlighted the strong partnership between Canada and the United States in various aspects but firmly stated that Canada’s prosperity is derived from its Canadian essence, not dependent on the U.S. This rebuttal was not initially part of Carney’s prepared speech but was added later, according to an official from his office.

In his address, Carney outlined the importance of Canadian values such as inclusivity and fairness, positioning Canada as a beacon of democracy and rights protection in the world. He expressed a commitment to defending services like child care, dental care, and pharmacare, and advocating for the vulnerable in society, reiterating the need to uphold these values.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Parliamentary session, Carney laid out his priorities, including enhancing economic collaboration with provinces, expanding international trade agreements, reforming the criminal justice system, promoting artificial intelligence, and making substantial investments in defense. He stressed the urgency of translating promises into tangible results swiftly and fairly.

Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Carney for what he perceived as unfulfilled promises and urged for concrete actions rather than words. Poilievre emphasized the importance of maintaining trade relations with the U.S. while pushing for resource development and pipeline approvals to support Canadian jobs and economic stability.

The cabinet retreat in Quebec City marked a significant gathering for Carney and his ministers, setting the stage for discussions on the economy, affordability, and security. The meeting aimed to assess progress on ministerial mandates and strategize for the upcoming legislative session.
