Carney Calls for Just Global Order

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a groundbreaking speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, highlighting the current state of the world and advocating for a new direction. Without directly naming U.S. President Donald Trump, Carney criticized the use of economic integration as a weapon by “great powers” and emphasized the need to move forward constructively. He called for a shift towards a more just and resilient global order.

In his 16-minute address, Carney not only critiqued the actions of the U.S. under Trump but also proposed a collaborative approach for middle powers like Canada to unite against dominant nations. Political leaders worldwide, from Australia to Europe to Mexico, have responded positively to Carney’s speech, recognizing the importance of his message.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb praised the speech as an insightful analysis of global changes and emphasized the role of values-based realism in shaping Canadian foreign policy. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte commended Canada’s renewed leadership within the organization and on the international stage.

California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that even U.S. leaders privately acknowledged the impact of Carney’s speech, underlining its influence on global discussions. However, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick criticized Canada’s complaints about trade treatment under Trump, highlighting the strong economic ties between the two countries.

Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers expressed admiration for Carney’s speech, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation based on shared values. Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for middle powers to stand together against bullying tactics from larger nations.

Marko Mihkelson, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Estonia’s Parliament, endorsed Carney’s speech as a call for free nations to unite against oppression. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair’s former director of communications, also praised Carney’s bold stance against Trump’s policies.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum hailed Carney’s speech as timely and insightful, resonating with the current global scenario. The opposition party in Mexico also lauded Carney’s address, recognizing the strategic alliances being formed by countries like Canada to counter hegemonic powers.
