Instagram’s new policies for teen accounts will now align with PG-13 movie guidelines, as announced by Meta. However, the effectiveness of these measures is being questioned by tech experts. Previously, teen account users were restricted from viewing “sensitive content,” such as sexually suggestive or violent posts. The updated rules will take it a step further by avoiding recommending posts with strong language, risky stunts, or content that could promote harmful behaviors.
Additionally, teenagers will be prevented from following accounts that consistently share inappropriate content for their age group and from viewing search results related to certain words like “gore” or “alcohol.” They will also be restricted from opening links on Instagram that violate the platform’s updated guidelines. Meta emphasized that while some content may occasionally be similar to what is seen in a PG-13 movie, they are striving to minimize such instances.
The changes aim to align Instagram’s rules with a recognized standard familiar to parents. These adjustments will be implemented gradually, starting with users in Canada, the U.S., U.K., and Australia, with the full rollout expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Teen accounts, introduced in September 2024 for users under 18, are set to private by default, limiting access to their content. Meta has progressively enhanced restrictions on these accounts, including limitations on livestreaming and nudity. These recent adjustments represent a significant shift in rules since the introduction of teen accounts.
Despite these updates, some experts view the added controls as belated. Richard Lachman, a media professor, believes content regulation through keyword filtering is not cutting-edge. He points out that teenagers could easily circumvent the restrictions by falsifying their age information. Meta, however, plans to employ age prediction technology and verification processes to address this issue.
Although Meta claims to use AI technology to detect teen users posing as adults, the transparency of these methods remains unclear. Research has indicated that existing teen account settings have not consistently filtered out harmful content, raising concerns about the platform’s efficacy in protecting young users.
While the new restrictions offer some level of protection, experts caution that parents should remain vigilant and actively engage with their children about online safety. They stress that relying solely on platform controls may not be sufficient, emphasizing the importance of parental involvement in monitoring and guiding their children’s digital activities.
