Nunavut MP Lori Idlout rejects Liberal Party switch

Date:

Nunavut’s Member of Parliament, Lori Idlout, has indicated that she currently has no intentions of switching to the federal Liberal Party. Idlout stated in an interview with CBC News that she has made the decision not to join the Liberals despite being approached by members from both the Liberal Party and her own constituents.

The NDP MP did not disclose the specific individuals who urged her to consider crossing the floor, but she acknowledged that the discussions have been significant for her. Idlout emphasized that her ultimate decision will prioritize the best interests of Nunavummiut, the people of Nunavut.

Recent instances of MPs, such as Chris d’Entremont and Michael Ma, defecting from the Conservative Party to join the Liberals have brought the latter close to securing a majority government by just one seat. However, Idlout’s neighboring MP in the Northwest Territories, Liberal cabinet minister Rebecca Alty, confirmed that she has not approached Idlout regarding a potential floor-crossing.

While Idlout expressed surprise at the decisions of d’Entremont and Ma, she hinted that further defections could occur in the future. Referring to her role in opposition, Idlout emphasized the importance of advocating for the needs and concerns of Nunavut residents and criticized the government’s handling of major projects legislation, including the One Canadian Economy Act.

Highlighting issues such as Indigenous rights, Arctic sovereignty, and healthcare, Idlout emphasized her commitment to representing her constituents effectively. She raised concerns about potential constraints on her ability to criticize the government if she were to switch parties. Political analyst Jerald Sabin noted that MPs crossing the floor risk alienating their voter base and highlighted the potential advantages and drawbacks of such a move in terms of political influence within the government.
