The Interlake region in Manitoba, located 300 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg, faced a jack pine budworm infestation in 2016, followed by a destructive wildfire in 2021. The area is still recovering, with wildfires continuing to threaten nearby regions.
Marley Moose, involved in a tree-planting program led by Nekoté LP, expressed a deep connection to the land and the importance of Indigenous communities taking stewardship of their territories. The Canadian Tree Nursery Association highlighted the urgent need for tree planting to offset deforestation caused by wildfires, pests like the mountain pine beetle, and human activities such as logging.
The ambitious 2 Billion Trees Program, initiated by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2019 with a $3.2 billion budget, was discontinued by the current administration. This decision has jeopardized tree-planting programs across the country, including Nekoté LP’s initiative.
Doug Hevenor, executive director of the CTNA, emphasized the critical role of tree planting in restoring forests and mitigating the impact of wildfires. As Canada faces consecutive severe fire seasons and a concerning outlook for 2026, the need for reforestation efforts is more pressing than ever.
With the cancellation of the 2 Billion Trees Program, organizations like the Blue-Green Planet Project, in partnership with Nekoté LP, are seeking alternative funding sources to continue their tree-planting goals. The importance of sustainable forestry practices and reforestation in combating climate change and preserving ecosystems was underscored by project manager Farron Sharp.
