“Stellantis Plans 11 New Models, Ontario Production Potential”

Date:

Global automaker Stellantis’ recent announcement of plans to introduce 11 new vehicle models in North America presents opportunities for potential production in Ontario, according to the head of the company’s Canadian division. Stellantis operates two assembly plants in Canada: one in Windsor, responsible for manufacturing the Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Charger, and another in Brampton, which has been inactive since 2023. Originally intended for a Jeep model production, Stellantis redirected the manufacturing to the U.S., sparking controversy in Canada regarding the substantial taxpayer funding the company has received.

During an investor day event in Michigan, Stellantis unveiled a comprehensive strategy to enhance its global product offerings, aiming to regain market share following recent financial challenges. Stellantis Canada President Trevor Longley expressed openness to exploring options for the Brampton plant, highlighting the influx of new models under the Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram brands. For instance, Chrysler, renowned for the Pacifica, plans to introduce three affordable crossover vehicles.

Dodge is gearing up to launch an entry-level performance vehicle, while Ram is developing a “muscle truck” and a large SUV. Jeep, too, will present new additions to its lineup. Stellantis emphasized a $60 billion investment across its brand portfolio, with specifics on manufacturing locations yet to be disclosed. The company remains eager to collaborate with partners to bring innovative products to market.

Both Longley and Dodge and Chrysler CEO Matt McAlear attended a celebration at the Windsor plant for the refreshed 2027 Chrysler Pacifica design. Unifor Local 444 President James Stewart expressed optimism about the potential for new models to be produced in Ontario, citing the existing capacity at the Windsor facility and the importance of resolving the status of the Brampton plant.

As negotiations for new collective agreements with automakers, including Stellantis, approach, discussions will focus on maximizing production facilities amid trade challenges with the U.S. Longley acknowledged ongoing discussions with government entities and Unifor to secure sustainable solutions for the Brampton plant. Longley also hinted at the potential for assembling Chinese electric vehicles in Brampton as part of Stellantis’ collaboration with Leapmotor.

The federal industry department highlighted ongoing engagement with Stellantis, Unifor, and the Ontario government to safeguard production, jobs, and long-term investments in Canada, emphasizing the confidentiality of resolution details and funding agreements.
